Sea Saba's divers, Tom and Lynn Franzson of Highlands, New Jersey are the proud new owners (Feb 2002) of Garden Cottage, one of Saba's finest homes. Avid divers and photographers, Tom and Lynn traveled and dove the globe before finding Saba. Far exceeding their expectations as a Caribbean dive destination, they booked a second trip. Now enthralled with the island's tranquility, topside beauty and friendly people, they looked at a home for sale just for kicks...Garden Cottage will soon be The Franzson's year-round residence but in the meantime, it's available for rental.
Garden Cottage wonderfully blends old world tradition with modern conveniences. Suitable for just the two of you or friends and family, the home has a complete kitchen with original Saban hearth, dining and living room, 3 bedrooms (all with the option of air conditioning), 1 spacious bathroom (separate shower room, vanity and toilet), several deck areas and as per the name, wonderful gardens--pineapple and mango trees as well as loads of flowering plants. A large pool and spacious pool deck can't be beat for after diving 'cooling out' or for a complete day of hanging out. The home has been host for a number of parties and weddings. Garden is the only property on Saba with air-conditioning as an option in each bedroom--cool nights are the norm on Saba but for those of you who feel you can't live without it in the tropics...Toughest decision, which outdoor area to enjoy today. Garden Cottage has internet capability--if you need to be in touch and have a laptop, contact us ahead of time and we'll have you "switched on" for an additional fee of $30/week. You will be billed for on-line time at the end of your stay (approximately $.06 per minute). Also available are both cd and dvd players--some on hand or feel free to bring some down. At the moment, there is no rental shop on Saba for DVD's--a business opportunity awaits! The history of Garden Cottage dates back 150 years. Mucker Hassell remembers how heavy Hilton Hassell's coffin was the day it was carried up the Booby Hill step road in 1939. The house remained vacant until Hal and Judy Meeks bought the property in 1967. It is unknown who originally built the house which is said to have molasses used to hold together the hand-hewn stones of the old kitchen. The Meeks found only a decayed pile of foundation stones and the still erect kitchen fireplace which was covered in brush. In 1973 they invited their architect friend, Frank Blaydon, from St. Croix to spend a week with them and design the rebuilding of the derelict house. He designed the home in the original style with mortise and tenon joints. This traditional type of construction lends additional strength to a wooden home during a storm. The land was cleared by the Meeks and Mucker Hassell using pickaxes. As the Booby Hill Road was not yet complete, the 11 truck loads of building supplies were unloaded onto a donkey and carried by hand to the site. The house was completed in 1975 with the pool added in the early nineties. The enlarged bathroom and garden room were the final additions in 1999. Seven nights and 10 dives packages for two persons are only $1255 per person including airport transfers, government tax and daily transfers.
