Yes, there's a real medical school on Saba! Saba University School of Medicine ("SUSOM") is recognized as one of the finest Caribbean-based medical schools. The school opened in 1994 with the first class of eight students and has grown to its present status of over 400 students and faculty members. Students come to Saba for the 'first step', basic sciences, a 20-month program. Originally, the school rented numerous smaller buildings around the island. In the early years, professors were also students working with a stipend. With the continued growth and success, Saba University School of Medicine is now located in a multi-million dollar facility boasting an all PhD staff with accreditation in states from New York to California. SUSOM has the largest facility on the island and is the island's largest direct employer with multi-faceted trickle down economics associated with it. An impressive large library is adjacent to the main building. A workout gym just for students is also on the property with talk of an eventual tennis court and swimming pool. Are you considering enrolling as a student? Many feel Saba is a great place to study with few distractions. Diving offers a great change of scenery. Many students find diving to be the right calming and cleansing needed to refresh their minds from the rigors of studying. Sea Saba offers local courses at great group rates, daily diving and snorkeling excursions as well as private boat charters.
Are you considering augmenting your medical resume with hyperbaric training? SUSOM has an entire hyperbaric team conducting research in its own chamber. This team and chamber are a separate entity from the Hyperbaric Team of the Saba Marine Park which provides hyperbaric treatment for recreation divers in the region. Sea Saba staff conducts regular
emergency training and is all part of the volunteer team for the
hyperbaric chamber. This page last updated on 10/04/2007 from our Windwardside office. |
