Talk about opposites!! Living on Saba, we enjoy visits to Anguilla because it is completely different than Saba--the highest point being about 100 feet (30m) (versus almost 3,000 feet--1000m), incredible beaches (versus no beaches), dry and desert like (versus mountainous rainforest) and just a different feel of a Caribbean island--and only 35 miles from each other! So if you're staying on Anguilla for a week or more, consider spicing up the holiday with a side trip to Saba, "The Unspoiled Queen". If you're planning a trip to Saba and can't imagine a Caribbean vacation without a white sand beach, we can help you plan an add-on package to Anguilla AND at an affordable price.
Tourists love Anguilla for its powdery white sand beaches, grand variety of upscale restaurants, and choice of accommodations from outrageous villas, to pampering hotels to small guest houses. Diving on Anguilla is different than Saba. Anguilla's diving is considerably shallower but also offers the option of wreck or reef diving. Worth the trip (weather permitting) is a dive with Michel to the El Buen Consejo Archeological Preserve, a Spanish Galleon lost in 1772 and discovered by Anguilla's own "Bull" Bryan. Complete with treasure and great history, this is an extraordinary find--see loads of information from history to the different types of medallions found on their website: www.spanishgalleon.ai We specifically love to visit Anguilla so that we can bike ride. Carimar Beach Club arranged Ross mountain bikes, delivered, for only $12 per day.
Getting to Saba from Anguilla Carimar
Beach Club Sea Saba's Value Recommendation: If you're considering a trip to Anguilla and don't yet have accommodations in place, Carimar Beach Club offers affordable accommodations on the quiet beach in Mead's Bay. To make the trip even more economical, each unit is complete with a fully equipped kitchen so you can prepare your own breakfasts or snacks but venture out for fine dining at night. Local barbeques and a superette are within walking distance but be sure to check out the fine dining as well. Carimar is ideally located: literally next door to the right is Malliouhana Hotel, to the left, world renowned Blanchard's restaurant as well as Coco Plums. Sea Saba and Carimar offer complete packages that work whether you are planning the trip from either direction--or contact Beth @ Dive Saba Travel to coordinate everything including best rates on international flights to the islands.
If you're a serious diver and visiting Anguilla, Saba needs to be on your "Must Do" list! See our "Getting Here" page to plan the logistics yourself (substitute AXA for SXM) or take the easy way out and simply contact Lynn. We can also arrange for lunch on the boat or after diving, snorkeling and tours for your non-diving companions as well as overnight accommodations on Saba so that you can enjoy another day of diving. However you choose to plan it, reservations are a must! There are only 19 seats on each plane and Sea Saba limits its capacity on our boats to only 10 divers (2 boats). Three dive operators service Anguilla, each in a different area of the island. Anguillan Divers operates out of Mead's Bay and Dougie (15-year veteran of The Dive Shop, no longer in business) now runs his own boat out of Sandy Ground--just ask anyone for "Dougie"! Only Shoal Bay Divers is allowed to dive the Spanish Galleon. Shoal Bay Divers is located on the north eastern end of the island in, of course, Shoal Bay. Special
conditions: The best way to enjoy a short Saba trip whether you're
coming over for the day, spending the night or adding on another week, is
to get in the water in Anguilla. Saba's famous pinnacle dives
(starting at 85', 28m) can only be enjoyed if you are experienced and been
diving recently. Although Anguilla is known for shallow, easy
dives--it's the perfect environment to get wet and reacquainted with your
equipment. Having said that, diving cannot be guaranteed in winter
months with possible ground swells so all the more reason to consider a
backup plan to Saba to make sure you don't miss out on diving while on
your Caribbean vacation--but please be prepared so you can enjoy the best
of what Saba offers!
Visiting Saba from other islands keeps getting easier! Email Lynn for the specifics of coming to Saba for just one day from St. Maarten, St. Barth's, Anguilla or Statia, our neighboring islands. So if you're concerned about no beach on Saba--there are plenty of options close by and easier than you may think! This page last updated on 11/23/2007 from our Windwardside office. |
